	<title>Carbs</title>
	<description>
With all the talk about carbs, do we really know what they are and what their purpose is? Some say they are good, others say they are bad. In fact, there are even good and bad carbs, as if they're caught in some kind of battle for diet supremacy. But are carbs that cut and dry. If there is such a thing as bad carbs, where are they found and why do we still eat food containing them? And how good are good carbs?

Carbs Explained
Calories come from three sources: protein, carbohydrates and fat. But we aren't that concerned with protein and fat, at least not to a certain degree. We are concentrating on carbs. What they are; what they do, and how much of them we need to consume.

Carbs are the body's main source of energy and calories. Just like protein, they provide four calories per gram. Fat provides way more (twice as much). Ironically, fiber has no calories because it can be absorbed by the body. Glucose breaks down most of the carbs you consume. Simple carbs are sugars that come from fruits and vegetables. Complex carbs are long chains of sugars, consisting mostly of starches and fiber, usually found in plant foods.

So what's the verdict?

When it comes to healthy eating, follow the United States Department of Agriculture's food pyramid. It shows you just how much servings of what you should eat daily. This is a good start for every diet. Once you know the norm, you'll know how to adjust to suit your body weight and your diet plans. The one thing to remember is that starving yourself is not a healthy diet plan. If anything, it does more damage than good. Starving yourself is like trying to drive your car without putting gas in it. You need fuel to keep going, but it all depends on what kind of fuel you put in your vehicle. The same go for carbs and other dietary ingredients. Learn before you diet.
