Two Types of Carbohydrates

The major source of the body's energy comes from carbohydrates. There are two types of carbohydrates: simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. The explanation of these is a bit confusing, and there really isn't a cut and dry concept of good and bad carbohydrates. Some good ones have bad qualities and vice versa. Both can be beneficial to your diet, and both have their drawbacks. Here is the breakdown.

Simple carbohydrates: These are also known as simple sugars to us. These are found in table sugar (refined sugar) i.e. white sugar. Most candy is made of simple sugars. Ironically, some healthy (fruit and milk) contain simple sugars. Obviously, these sources are better to get your simple sugars from than candy because they are more nutritious.

Complex carbohydrates: Another name for these are starches. Breads, crackers, pasta, etc. are all starches. Sometimes complex carbohydrates are better for diet, in other cases, simple carbohydrates are better. It depends on what you're eating and for what reason. However, foods like white flour and white rice have been processed. This means that all the important nutrients and fiber have been removed. Without fiber, you lose that full feeling, causing you to overeat. Fiber is also good for your digestive system. It keeps you "regular."

Your body breaks down carbohydrates into simple sugars and absorbs them into the bloodstream. The sugar is then moved into the cells by the insulin produced by the pancreas. This is where your energy comes from. When this process happens too quickly, you get hungry quicker. When it happens slower, you feel fuller longer.

When it comes to diet, everything affects everything. Your diet affects what happens to your body, which affects the way you feel. Before starting any diet, especially those where you are juggling carbohydrates, consult a doctor first.
