Low Carbohydrate Diet

What the AMA says about the Low Carbohydrate Diet:
Although the low carbohydrate diet can be a great way to start a healthy way of eating and living, there is still more you need to know about it before embarking upon that journey. Not necessarily bad things, just things you may want to take into consideration before you make that commitment. The American Medical Association has done an extensive studies on the low carbohydrate diet, especially diets like the Atkins Diet. What they found could lead you to a better decision making on whether or not a low carbohydrate diet is for you.

Research Findings
The most widely known low carbohydrate diet is the Atkins Diet. The Atkins Diet does get results, but there are some costs to it. According to the study, the dieter may be cutting back on carbohydrates, but the fat intake has changed very little. In fact, the dieter consumes just as much fat or even more to substitute for the carbs left out in the diet. The weight lost by the dieter is water weight and not necessarily fat. The diet is great for short term weight loss, but the loss is definitely not permanent.

Breakdown of the Diet
Diets like the Atkins Diet may give you short-term weight loss. But the loss is due to dehydration
The weight loss may also come from less calories entering the bodies. In other words, the person doesn't eat as much. Why? Diet food -- in layman terms -- sucks.
Because the fat is not adjust or eliminated, the high content of fat may affect the heart in the long run
The cholesterol improvement would be credited to weight loss, not the change in body shape. Simply put, you're not in better shape, but your cholesterol is adjusting to your diet and not your shape.

WARNING:
High protein diets are risky for patients living with diabetes because it can speed up kidney disease. Make sure you consult with your doctor before getting a low carbohydrate diet.
