How Sweet it Is
Most low carb chocolates are made with either saccharin, sucralose or aspartame. Some are made with sugar alcohols like malitol and lactitol. Some use a combination. But the best low carb chocolates are made by Russell Stover, and they use mostly malitol in their low carb chocolates. Malitol does do a great job sweeting things, but there's a new sweetener called erythritol that is even better. Why? Because sugar alcohols cause gastric distress. Nothing damaging, but it's not pleasant. After all, any kind of artificial sweetener is bound to have some kind of side effects, right? Not necessarily. Erythritol has all the sweetness of sugar alcohols without the gastric problems. There are at least two different kinds of low carb chocolate bars that are made with erythritol--Reese's low carb version of their beloved peanut butter cups and a bar called Chocolate Dreams & Wishes. This is because erythritol is fairly new to the United States. It's been approved by the FDA, there's just a general lack of knowledge about it at this early stage.
Anyway, back to low carb chocolates! You can find them in almost any candy store. You might have different tastes from others who have reviewed the low carb chocolates we've mentioned on this page. Different strokes for different folks! But remember--just because a candy is labeled "low carb" doesn't automatically mean it tastes bad. Don't knock it until you've tried it!
